First Steps avoids most discipline problems by maintaining a well-organized program. Playground and class rules are reviewed daily.

Discipline is never in the form of spanking or physical punishment.   Our methods of discipline are redirection, positive reinforcement and time out. Time out is one minute per year of the age of the child. Serious behaviors result in a phone call to the parent   At that point, parental intervention is required to prevent undesirable behaviors from escalating. We recognized that children will, at times, exhibit unacceptable behaviors.   Children are in the process of "learning how to behave". However, violence towards other children or the staff will not be tolerated.  Any child that does not respond to our discipline methods or parent intervention will be asked to leave First Steps in Learning.
